What places are available in Athens to eat?
There are many restaurants on Court Street, which is an area to the west of North Green on the Campus Map. There are also many places to eat along East State Street. In addition to local places with small-town flair, Athens has many major food chains. In short, finding good places to eat will not be a problem.

Where will I park?
Off-campus students can obtain a parking permit at Parking Services. Be advised that certain locations (such as University Courtyard) provide bus transportation to campus, so it may not be necessary for STEAM Fellows located at such locations to apply for a commuter pass. Prices range from $35 for a single quarter to $105 for the full year.
Athens has sidewalks on virtually all of its streets and is generally safe at all hours. If you live within the Athens city limits, student parking is typically unnecessary (and, depending on your proximity to campus, may not be provided).

What types of facilities does the campus offer?
The campus provides a state-of-art recreation center (called "Ping" after a president emeritus's nickname), where students can enjoy basketball, volleyball, racquetball, running, rock climbing, weight-lifting, and various other activities. The campus also provides tennis courts, a golf course, a driving range, an aquatic center, and various other types of facilities. See the Recreation Page for more information.

Where will I go to obtain my student ID?
Normally, graduate students participate in a week-long orientation period in the Fall semester. However, most STEAM fellows will be asked to take a summer course over the summer quarter when orientation is not available. These students should visit the HDL Center to obtain your student ID. This will be required to use many of the campus's facilities.

Where will I go to obtain my campus e-mail address?
Students can set up their campus e-mail accounts at the same location that they received their student IDs, the HDL Center. The username for the e-mail account will be what the campus calls your "Oak ID". You can use this Oak ID to login to your e-mail account at https://webmail.ohio.edu/. In addition to webmail access, one can use IMAP (and, therefore, most mail clients such as Outlook, Thunderbird, Mutt, etc) using imaps://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/

Is there anything else I need to take care of when I get to Athens?
Students will need to check in with the graduate secretary shortly after classes begin to take care of any remaining paperwork and to receive any additional instructions. In addition, students will need to check in with Graduate Services at McKee House to receive paperwork related to payroll.

How does Ohio University health insurance work?
If you were on your parent's insurance while you were an undergrad, you may not have health insurance from them as a graduate student. For a fee (which the STEAM grant will pay), you can be insured through Ohio University.
If you are insured externally of Ohio University, you can waive the health insurance charge (which appears on your bill by default). If you wish to waive your health insurance fee, you have to bring a photo ID and proof of your current insurance to the Bursar's office at Chubb Hall.
