The Appalachian Tycoon project is a simulation of what happens when factories and houses are built near waterways. In the Sim high school students can build factories and houses and then observe the water pollution effects. They can then build pollution control devices that will cleanup the water pollution problems. They are scored based on the items they can build without polluting the water supply.

It was built was a demonstration model for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency funded "Improving Environmental Awareness of Water, Waste, and Land Issues in Appalachian Ohio (WWWL Ohio) through a High School Student Contest of Computer-Simulated Environmental Models" project. The VITAL Lab is working with two area high schools to develop a virtual science fair where high school students will built environmental awareness science projects in the Second Life virtual world. The high school student's projects will then be judged in a virtual science fair at the end of the school year.
