Furry family lets you create a family of rabbits via completion of Punnett squares. Both the genotypes and phenotypes of a mother and father rabbit are given along with the instructions that 3 baby bunnies must be created. Each baby bunny has 5 traits (body type, fur color, eye color, ear shape, and gender) that must be determined. Instructions are given listing the desired traits for each rabbit. The corresponding Punnett squares must then be filled out correctly and the required gene combination must be selected. As you progress through the game a family portrait of the rabbits is slowly completed.

Lesson Plan

Description of the Science Content of the Module: Life Science, heredity, and punnett square drilling.

When it is most appropriate to use the Module: Teaches the material as the game proceeds. The module can be played independently of instruction.

Game Play: Each of the 3 baby bunnies has 5 traits to be determined. You are given instructions on what trait is desired along with a Punnett square to fill out based on the genotype and phenotype of the father and mother. Once the Punnett square is completed, the required trait must be selected.

The game is completed when all Punnett squares have been completed and the family portrait page is completed.

Controls: A mouse and keyboard are required for this game

National Science Education Standards: Grade 5-8 – Reproduction and Heredity

  • Every organism requires a set of instructions for specifying its traits. Heredity is the passage of these instructions from one generation to another.
  • Hereditary information is contained in genes, located in the chromosomes of each cell. Each gene carries a single unit of information. An inherited trait of an individual can be determined by one or by many genes, and a single gene can influence more than one trait. A human cell contains many thousands of different genes.
  • The characteristics of an organism can be described in terms of a combination of traits. Some traits are inherited and others result from interactions with the environment.

Grade 6 – Life Sciences

7. Recognize that likenesses between parents and offspring (e.g., eye color, flower color) are inherited. Other likenesses, such as table manners are learned.

8th Grade Life Science:

4. Recognize that an individual organism does not live forever; therefore reproduction is necessary for the continuation of every species and traits are passed on to the next generation through reproduction.
5. Describe that in asexual reproduction all the inherited traits come from a single parent.
